Manawa Youth Sports – Rules for Umpires

Please read the following rules carefully. These expectations apply to all MYSA umpires and are required to ensure fairness, safety, and professionalism throughout the season.

  1. MYSA will provide umpires with a full-season schedule before the season begins. You must notify the Umpire Coordinator of any known scheduling conflicts by the designated deadline.
  2. Younger umpires will generally be assigned to T-ball and coach-pitch games, while older umpires will be assigned to baseball and softball games.
  3. Umpire assignments are based on availability, not gender. Every effort will be made to fairly distribute games among all approved applicants.
  4. All umpires must be at least two (2) years older than the players they are officiating.
  5. An umpiring clinic will be offered prior to the season. Attendance is required unless proof of prior umpire training is provided.
  6. Umpires are expected to arrive at the field at least 30 minutes prior to game time.
  7. Umpires must introduce themselves to both coaches before the start of the game.
  8. If a parent or coach argues a call, remain calm and professional. Do not engage in confrontation. Stand by your call. Any issues involving Manawa coaches should be reported to the Umpire Coordinator.
  9. All calls must be made loudly and clearly so players, coaches, and spectators can hear them. Balls and strikes must always be verbalized.
  10. When issuing a warning for any reason, including abusive language, throwing a bat, or unsafe behavior, both dugouts must be informed.
  11. Umpires are responsible for keeping track of game time. Field timers must be used to avoid disputes regarding time limits or last innings.
  12. If you are unable to umpire a scheduled game, you must notify the Umpire Coordinator at least 24 hours in advance whenever possible. Do not find your own replacement. Only the coordinator may authorize a replacement.
  13. Dress Code: MYSA will provide an official umpire shirt which must be worn at all games and may not be altered. Umpires must wear tennis shoes (no flip-flops) and are strongly encouraged to wear black shorts. Umpires represent the MYSA program and community, and a professional appearance is expected at all times.
  14. Food Policy: Eating food or candy on the field is not permitted. Water will be provided free of charge from the concession stand. If food is found in umpire gear, payment for that game may be withheld.
  15. Umpires will be evaluated throughout the season. Repeated tardiness, failure to follow rules, or unprofessional conduct may result in dismissal or not being invited back in future seasons.
  16. Umpires are paid at the end of the season. To receive payment, umpires must sign in at the concession stand for every game officiated. This sign-in serves as MYSA’s official record of attendance.

Pay Schedule

Umpires are paid per game based on the level and position worked. Pay rates apply equally to baseball and softball games and are not based on years of umpiring experience.
